Chennai North Lok Sabha Constituency
Chennai North constituency is constituency number 2 out of 39 in the state. It consists of 6 assembly segments at present (2023).
Six assembly segments of the Chennai North Constituency along with its assembly constitution number and the elected members of the legislative assembly are listed below
- Thiruvottiyur (Constituency# 10) – K.P. Shankar
- Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar (Constituency# 11) – Mr. J. John Ebenezer
- Perambur (Constituency# 12) – Mr. R. D. Sekar
- Kolathur (Constituency# 13) – Mr. M.K. Stalin
- Thiru-Vi-Ka-Nagar (Constituency# 15) – Mr. P. Sivakumar
- Royapuram (Constituency# 17) – Mr. Idream R. Murthy
- Thiruvottiyur – Thiruvottiyur assembly constitution is 10 and it covers ward number 1-14 of Thiruvottiyur Zone (Zone I) of Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). Mr. K.P. Shankar of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is elected representative of the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election.
- Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar – Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar, popularly known as RK Nagar, constitutes to assembly constitution number 11. RK Nagar is included in the Tondiarpet Zone (Zone IV) of GCC and the Tondiarpet Zone consists of ward numbers 34-48. Mr. J. John Ebenezer of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is elected representative of the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election.
- Perambur – Perambur assembly constitution is 12 and it is also included in the Tondiarpet Zone (Zone IV) of GCC along with RK Nagar and some parts of Royapuram. Mr. R. D. Sekar of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is elected representative of the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election.
- Royapuram – Royapuram assembly constitution is 17 and it covers wards number 49-63 of Royapuram Zone (Zone V) and is partially included in the Tondiarpet Zone. Mr. Idream R. Murthy of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is elected representative of the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election.
- Kolathur – Kolathur assembly constitution is 13 and it is included in the Thiru-Vi-Ka-Nagar zone of Greater Chennai Corporation. Mr. M.K. Stalin of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is elected representative of the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election.
- Thiru-Vi-Ka-Nagar – Thiru-Vi-Ka-Nagar assembly constitution is 15 and it covers ward number 64-78 of Thiru-Vi-Ka-Nagar Zone (Zone VI). Mr. P. Sivakumar of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is elected representative of the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election.
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu
Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, elected member of Kolathur assembly constituency, is the present Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (2023) and prior to the post, he served as Deputy CM and Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration in his long political career as a prominent member of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He is the son of former Chief Minister and Late. M. Karunanidhi.
MK Stalin has been associated with various initiatives in his tenure as CM aimed at social welfare, education, and healthcare, such as the Rs 1000 Monthly financial assistance scheme for women’s welfare, the breakfast programme for school children, and so on.
Member of Parliament (MP)
Dr. V. Kalanidhi, a medical doctor by profession, is the elected Member of Parliament to Lok Sabha from Chennai North Constituency. Kalanidhi Veerasamy is son of former minister of Tamil Nadu, Arcot. N. Veerasamy. He is also the president of DMK – NRI Wing at present.
Cultural Significance of Chennai North Constituency
Chennai North Constituency which covers the northern part of Chennai is popularly known as North Madras. Fort. St. George located in the Chennai North was the first English fortress established in India, railway heritage marks the early development of railways in India and the historical roots of maritime activities show the strongest reflection of the influence of the British Colonial era. Present-day areas like George Town, Mint, and Clock Tower were once a key settlement of the British East India Company, and its closeness to the widespread coastal path is believed to be one of the reasons.
Royapuram, Thiruvottiyur, and RK Nagar areas contribute a significant share of the fishing community in the state. The local fishing and trading activities via port are some of the common livelihoods of many residents of North Madras.
Not only do the architecture and business settlements tell the stories of the past, but North Madras is also a place of rich culture that speaks of its cultural roots. The region houses some of the significant places of worship such as Sacred Heart Church, Kandasamy Temple, Kasimedu Dargah Shareef, Tondiarpet Vinayaka Temple, Washermenpet Perumal Temple, and so on.
